GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT Our Fall, Winter and Spring Sports

The fall season usually begins during the second week of August and lasts through October, although some playoffs such as football will continue until Thanksgiving.

The winter season usually begins in early November and continues through March.

The spring season generally runs from early March and ends in early June.

The athletic trainer for all sports is Rick Knizek.  He is located at High School East every day beginning at 2:30pm.

Each season offers a variety of opportunities for boys and girls.  There are four levels of competition:  Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman and Modified.  The Freshman and Modified levels are only offered for certain sports.  The Varsity (V) level is primarily made up of juniors and seniors, though it is not uncommon to have exceptional underclassmen on a varsity team.  The Junior Varsity (JV) is mostly tenth graders but when there is no Freshman team available many JV programs will contain ninth graders.  The Freshman (F) level is comprised mainly of ninth grade students; however, younger students who are exceptional athletes may be Selectively Classified (see below) to compete at the Freshman level.  The Modified (M) level is a developmental program for younger athletes in eighth grade and some exceptional seventh graders.  The athletes participating in a Modified program do not have to be Selectively Classified.

arrow bullet Selective classification for 7th or 8th graders to participate on an interscholastic athletic team
The Selection/Classification Program is a process for screening students to determine their readiness to compete in interscholastic athletic competition by evaluating their physical maturity, fitness and skill. The student may be placed at the appropriate level of competition which should result in increased opportunity, a fairer competitive environment, reduced injury and greater personal satisfaction. The intent of this program is to provide for students in grades 7 through 12 to safely participate at an appropriate level of competition based upon readiness rather than age and grade.

Prior to tryouts, students will have to complete the following:

Step 1: Student must have a Sports Physical, either at school during the predetermined sports physical nights (click here for information on school physicals), OR by the student's primary medical doctor (click here for information on private physical clearance).

Step 2: Student must have a MATURATION screening done by the school's physicians, Dr. Marinello or Dr. Cotugno. STUDENTS MUST COME TO A SPORTS PHYSICAL NIGHT TO HAVE THIS DONE.

Step 3: Student must have a Physical Fitness test done by Coaches Eggleston/Dochat, to determine a student's ability to participate in upper level sports.  Fall 2008 testing dates are August 12 at 8:00 a.m. for boys, August 13 at 8 a.m. for girls, in the HSE Lobby.

If the student meets all the requirements, he/she will be eligible to TRYOUT for his/her particular sport. This process does not guarantee participation on a team.

Selection-Classification Process

Selection classification is designed for a student who demonstrates physical capabilities that indicate she/he may be able to participate in the Shenendehowa sports program at the Freshman, Junior Varsity or Varsity level.  To be considered for such an opportunity you must complete the process outlined below.

SELECTION CLASSIFICATION PROCESS:

June (preparation for Fall Sports only)

  • The athlete will attend the specific sports meeting (will be announced in school) to receive the information regarding try outs.

  • Complete the Selection-Classification packet (personal information and parent signature forms).

  • The athlete will see their physical education teacher for their physical fitness scores.

  • They will return the completed packet to Coach Dochat (boys) or Coach Eggleston (girls) at the Gowana Middle School by June 15th -  there are no exceptions!

  • Coaches will submit a list of athletes to be tested to Mr. Christopher Culnan, Athletic Director, and either Coach Dochat (boys) or Coach Eggleston (girls).

  • dochscot@shenet.org, egglshaw@shenet.org

August

  • The athlete will report to sport physicals on August 4, 7, or 11.  You must attend one of these three physical dates - There are no make-up dates.

  • Athletes will report to High School East for testing of in the main lobby on August 12 at 8 a.m. for boys, August 13 at 8 a.m. for girls.

  • The ONLY athletes tested will be those who have completed the sports physical and maturation process with the school physician, Dr. Marinello.

  • Coaches will be responsible for completing any exemptions required for the athlete to compete.  The exemption form must be filed with the NYS Education Department.

ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE ENTIRE PROCESS WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO TRY-OUT.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Committing yourself to completing the Selection Classification process does not secure or guarantee you a position on the team.  Being recommended by your physical education teacher, having a sport physical and passing the fitness test only provides you with the opportunity to TRYOUT for the team!

SPECTATOR COURTESY CODE

It is the belief that good sportsmanship on the part of spectators at high school athletic contests is as important as good sportsmanship on the part of the players. The following guidelines for spectator conduct are expected as a means of continuing and strengthening the ties that exist between competing schools. Spectators are encouraged to be actively involved in positive behaviors that promote enthusiastic support for our interscholastic teams. Spectators should cheer for our teams rather than against others. Discourteous or unsportsmanlike behaviors are unacceptable. No spectator should be involved in any of the following actions:

  • No one shall throw any object on to the playing surface. This action is equally dangerous to Shen athletes, other participants and spectators.
  • No one shall use unacceptable language when cheering or engage in any cheer that is demeaning to a team or an individual (players, coaches, referees, or other spectators)
  • No sound producing devices shall be used. This includes horns of any type, whistles, drums, etc.
