What We’re Learning

*Sharing - Next week please have your child bring in something that begins with the short 'e' sound that is not an egg.  Write down three clues and we will try to guess what it is.  They may bring in a picture of something if it is easier than finding an actual object.

*We have begun to learn how to do some of our centers.  Center time is a time of day which provides an opportunity for independent practice of literacy skills.

Reading

*We began our guided reading groups this week.  Children came home with their Practice Reader Bags.  When they bring them home, be sure to ask them to read their books to you.  When they are finished please sign and return the bag and book the next day.

*Next week I will be taking some time to reassess their reading levels. Many students have shown growth since their last assessment at the end of the year in kindergarten.  I would like to get more up to date information as far as their reading levels are concerned.

                                                                 Writer’s Workshop

*Last week we focused how the children can use their illustrations to tell a story.  Children have rehearsed a story aloud to a partner, next they have gone back to their seats to try and illustrate all the parts that they have told aloud.  When they go to write the story they may use the picture as a reference.

*This week we built on what we did last week and used our pictures to add words to our stories.  If we have a great amount of details in our pictures than chances are that we will be able to transfer this detail to our words.

                                   Math

* We have continued to work with basic addition concepts and number recognition.  Math vocabulary words that the children have learned are:

                                          sum            addition             equal               plus

*Please remember to send library books in on Thursdays.

*If you did not schedule a parent-teacher conference time, please contact me.  There are still a few timeslots available.

*Please label your child’s snack.  At times they do not know what to eat and into the room they come with their lunch sandwich.

*Please send some kind of jacket or sweatshirt for when the children go out at recess.  It is a bit chilly at the time of day when they go outside and a few of them have complained of being cold.

* First grade teachers are collecting a $10.00 Activity fee from all students for special projects, supplies, etc.  You may make a check out to Cash or Skano Student Activity. Thank you!  Please send it in with your child if you have not done so already.  Thank you to those of you who have already sent it in!!!

*Mrs. Robbins has agreed to be our homeroom mother this year.  She will contact you when occasions arise.  She will most likely need assistance with certain activities so any help will be appreciated.  J
