- 12/6/21 – How would I be able to see and interact with the therapy dogs at High School East? I see them often but I never see them in use. – Student
A. The dogs typically stay with the staff member they belong to. Therefore, they end up interacting with students that have that staff member for class. Should you want to interact with therapy dogs, the Student Center has two that are available to everyone.

- If a student gets passing grades in 10th grade global for all 4 quarters but fails the Regents, how is it determined whether the student is considered to have passed the class for credit? I’d the failing Regents exam calculated into that determination so that the student might fail the class and the Regents? Or does the student get credit for the class but not for the Regents? For some students this could make the difference between graduating and not graduating since for basic Regents a student only needs to pass 1 social studies regents.
A. Yes, the Regents exam score is included in the calculation of students’ final course grades in Global History & Geography-10. Students can re-take the exam in August and the new score will be used to re-calculate their course grade. There are two Social Studies Regents exams. Students will also take the U.S. History & […]
- The new Seal of Biliteracy requirement is unnecessary and takes time away from what the course is supposed to teach us. We had to use up class time because Shen wants the whole world to know that all of its students are “bilingual” when everyone knows that 95% of students do not actually learn to speak the language they take fluently. This is a waste of class time and should be optional as it once was. Making it a requirement takes away its importance to the students who actually care and wanted be recognized for truly excelling in their LOTE class. This project does nothing to prove the biliteracy of students, all it does it add more stress and take away from class time.
A. The Seal of Biliteracy is an opportunity for both World Language students and English-Language Learners to demonstrate that they are able to read and write at an intermediate-high level of proficiency in two languages, and a chance for students and families to celebrate the hard work that students have completed during their time at […]

Is there a list of ineligible students that is checked when tickets are sold? if so, who sees this list? Do other students see the list? How does this actually work? Btw, I think the district really ought to look seriously at who is affected by this policy and what message it sends to them as to noninclusiveness and consider terminating the policy.
A. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzhTFNVk126-SW9BN1VwQWlRZWc/view Academics: A report is run after every interim and quarter for students failing 2 or more subjects. Attendance/Behavior- students are informed by a CAP in a meeting. Students get […]
- Why aren’t students doing chemistry labs required to wear gloves? They are dealing with dangerous chemicals, and then touching all of their papers, pencils, and phones. It seems like this is not a safe method.

- Hi, I was wondering who I should contact about the amount of Summer homework many children have? It seems if you are in HS and in accelerated or honors classes, you get punished over the summer. The amount of time spent – daily – on homework is unacceptable (Math, English and Social Studies). My child is also taking a voluntary health class this summer and has that work as well. That should be more than enough! Thank you.
A. Contact information for all of the academic administrators for the various subject areas can be found here: https://www.shenet.org/contact-us/
- The school website says 804 students would be graduating this year making it the largest class in Shen history. At the graduation it was stated that 783 students would be graduating, this is also the number in the newspapers. How many students of the class of 2018 actually graduated.
A. We apologize for the mistake. The actual size of the graduating class was 771, making it the third largest graduating class behind 2015 and 2016 which were tied at 779.

- My mother, who is a Shen graduate, and I were visiting the memorial garden in front of the high school the other day. It was brought to my attention that many of the students who had passed don’t have a memorial. Two of which are her best friend who passed in ninth and her fiance who passed in twelth. There was nobody in there before the late nineties, and something needs to be done, there are good students who deserve to be in there. I expect an answer, because this needs addressing more than other problems about air conditioning and Chromebooks. This is about plain respect for the passed.
A. Anyone who wishes to donate a stone to the memorial garden in honor of a student or teacher who has passed can contact the high school administration.
- How do you get into the secret honors societies if you have the appropriate grades? Like the new social studies honors? Was this invite to apply only? Like did the teachers whisper in your or your parents ears (assuming they are friends with them)? A political set up perhaps, favoritism just like everything else here. Ridiculous.
A. *October 15, 2021: This response is out of date. Since May 2019, the eligibility requirements to be invited to apply for Rho Kappa are attendance at Shen for one semester; a minimum average for Grade 9-11 Social Studies courses of a 95 and an overall cumulative weighted GPA of 92 at the end of junior […]

A. Yes, the two are totally unrelated.
- who makes up the “rules “for senior privileges
A. The High School administration.
- Why doesn’t Shen offer more SAT / ACT dates? Many other high schools offer it almost every date the tests are, yet Shen only offers it once. Being such a large district with over 2000 students, it should really be offered more.
The SAT/ACT is run by the College Board, not Shenendehowa.
- Who uses the greenhouse? Like what’s it for? I can water the plants if they need help.
A. The greenhouse is used mainly by High School East’s Environmental Science courses. Students grow plants from seed in soil in a NFT hydroponics system. They record and analyze data on the growth of their plants and learn about the specific needs of various types of plants.
- My daughter will be a senior next year and due to a late year birthday she’ll be taking her drivers test during the summer. Is this going to impact her applying for a parking spot for senior privileges? I would hope not as the school can’t exclude kids who get their licenses over the summer. Please explain. Thanks!
A. She can apply for senior privileges but she cannot drive until she gets her license.
- Why doesn’t the school do after prom parties like other schools?
A. We used to but they were stopped due to low attendance.
- Why doesn’t Shen crack down on Juniors illegally driving to school? Are you aware that some Juniors find willing Seniors that do not drive and register the Junior’s car in their name for a parking pass? Why can’t Shen require the Senior’s guardian to attest (with penalties) to their car registrations? Seems like and easy deterrent.
A. We are aware at times that Juniors attempt to park illegally. We monitor the lot, address these issues, and discipline students as warranted on a regular basis. In addition, when a senior is approved for parking, the CAPS office reviews all documentation including licenses and registrations before issuing a parking sticker. This would make […]
- Why do we have to spend so much money on caps and gown when we aren’t even allowed to keep them?
A. You are paying to rent them.
- How would I join the NHS in HS?
A. You don’t join. You have to meet the criteria. http://shennhs.webs.com/
- will my AP World exam go into the portal
A. Students can access their AP exam scores in two ways. They can login to the College Board website and get them directly. After we receive them from the College Board, we upload them into students’ Naviance accounts. If you’re asking if AP exam scores are included in your course grade, the answer is no, […]
- Are sophmore’s allowed to drive in during regents week?
A. Yes, if you have your license.
- Is there a limit on how many temporary parking passes a student can receive at High School East?
A. There are five temporary parking spots designated by signage at High School East, therefore only five temporary passes can be issued each day. Temporary parking passes are generally only issued to students for medical related reasons, such as having to leave during the school day for a doctor’s appointment. The CAPS office will often […]
- Please do something about the parking situation. It seems there are students parking in the lots that shouldn’t be. Is there any reinforcement of the rules? Are there enough spaces for every driver that has been given the opportunity to park? This has been ongoing all year and nothing seems to be getting done about it.
A. This is an ongoing battle. We issue tow letters and have towed vehicles that park without a pass. Our monitors and CAP’s frequently check the parking lot. Yes, there are enough spaces for everyone that has been issued a pass.
- If you have lunch in Highschool East are you no longer allowed to go to the library during your lunch period?
A. The library is open during lunch and students are permitted to go. There is, however, a capacity limit in the library and if it reaches that the library stops accepting students until there is room.
- I pick my child up esch day in the pick-up drop off line outside HSW. Lately, there have been many buses from other districts and coach buses blocking the pick-up line, making parents back up, move, go elsewhere. Can you clarify the school’s expectations of this area? I feel like I’m doing something wrong or these drivers aren’t being told the proper places to park. Thanks
A. For those looking to pick up a student at High School West after dismissal, would you please park your car in the front parking lot and then proceed to the front circle once the buses head out of this area. This will prevent students being picked up from having to walk through the parking […]
- How would a student go about joining the National Art Honor Society?
A. Talk to your art teacher.
- Does a field trip count as an abscense (will it show up on my official transcript as an abscense)?
A. It is an excused absence. Absences are on a transcript but it does not distinguish between excused vs unexcused. It just lists “Days Absent” and “Days Tardy.”
- What were the requirements for a sophomore to receive a letter inviting them to the ShenNext Medicine informational meeting?
A. Individuals eligible for the ShenNext meeting must be in the top 10% of their class
- Is it possible the High School Musical Company would do a production of Hamilton?
A. Any selection for the HS musical will be considered providing the rights are available, the content is appropriate for public High School students and audiences, and the show is flexible enough given the student composition within the cast at the given time.
- Does college personal finance class count for higher weighting for your gpa?
A. College Personal Finance/Investment is weighted 1.06 as are all College or AP courses for GPA and Rank purposes only – grades on report cards are not weighted.
- why cant juniors drive into school
A. Not enough parking spaces.
- Is there a list of all the classes during summer school? Where can I find them?
A. You can get that in the College, Counseling and Career Center.
- To take basically any of the technology related classes in high school do you have to take DDE first?
A. College Drawing and Design for Engineering (DDE) is the initial course in the college level Project Lead the Way progression and is therefore a prerequisite for College Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), College Principles of Engineering (POE), and Honors Automation and Robotics. Drawing and Design for Production (DDP) is an alternate prerequisite to DDE for Engineering […]
- just a small thing, but at HSE, there is a yellow rope in the main lobby preventing students from walking directly towards the west wing, instead they must circle around the front desk go in that direction. It’s really not a big deal, but I was just wondering why it is there.
A. It’s a safety issue. It helps ensure that visitors are checked in at the front desk and we know where they are going when they arrive.
- Shen issues many pink parking tickets in the student parking lot warning that the cars without parking permits will be towed. How many cars actually get towed? I’ve seen the same cars with pink citations over and over.
A. We try not to tow any vehicles as it is inconvenient and costly for the person who has their vehicle towed. With that said, we will tow a vehicle if they continue to violate our rules and park without permission.
- What class would be the next progression after Cult Lit?
A. See the social studies course progressions: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pwdAb9jp0ldGzSqd2yHR9fiOGnszNCMeUyedlDg99EA/view

A. At Shenendehowa, our Social Studies Department takes the responsibility of preparing our students to fulfill their social and political responsibilities as […]

- Where can I find the dates for the high school choral concerts
A. https://www.shenet.org/about-us/events-calendar/shen-high-school-events-calendar/
- Why are weighted grades not used for determining Green Award recipients? I personally take very challenging courses and unfortunately my grades have dropped a little bit due to them. It’s not fair for another student taking all regular courses and getting 100s in them to get the GPA award and not me, when I am taking some the hardest classes offered in the high school and would easily qualify for the award if weighted grades were used.
A. Weighted grades are used. However, we do not round grades.
- Why are students not allowed to stand in the library in the morning? We are always being told to go find a seat even when we need to ask our friend for help on the homework.
A. We need to maintain an academic environment in the library. When there are no more seats available we are at capacity. If the library is full there is seating in the cafeteria available before homeroom.
- Are sunglasses and/or hoods allowed to be worn during the school day at High School West?
A. - Why doesn’t the crew team get any school funding?

- Can a student take an online course (core, honors, AP) at the same time as their own classes and once completed, transfer the credits from the online course into their high school credits?
A. AP scores are not on the high school transcript. The scores are self-reported on college applications. Students then send official scores from College Board to the one school they select to attend. So, if they wanted to report the scores, they would do so on their college application. If a student is seeking course credit, it […]

A. The cafeteria is for eating and socializing. The library is a place for school work.
- Why do seniors have to go to school on PSAT day
A. To learn.
- Has shen ever considered getting certified to have IB programs be taught at the highschool?
A. The superintendent has looked into it extensively and the decision is to stick to the provision of a a wide array of AP courses which are more readily accepted by colleges and recognized as being extremely rigorous.
- My daughter will be a senior next year. Can you tell me how parking permits/passes are given out? Is there an application? Is there a deadline? How is this handled?
A. You can find the answers to your questions under Senior Privileges: https://www.shenet.org/shen-high-school/high-school-senior-privileges/

- on a high schoolers report card that is taking honors and ap classes, what average is on the report card? the weighted or the unweighted one?
A. Unweighted. Weighted grades are only used for class rank.
- whats the policy on senior pranks
A. They aren’t allowed and you will be subject to consequences outlined in the code of conduct.
- If you don’t have a parking pass for HSE, can you still “park” there if you don’t park in an actual spot? For example, many students park on the grass/dirt by the road everyday and don’t have to move. Is it okay to park there?
A. No, you can’t drive to school if you don’t have a parking pass.
- This is from the high school graduation document posted on Shen website: “dress or blouse and skirt for girls; trousers (no jeans) and dress shirt for boys; dress shoes for both”. The girls wore light short sleeveless dresses and sandals. The boys wore pants, dress shirt, tie, socks, and dress shoes, being all covered up, in the heat and humidity. Why are boys not allowed to wear nice shorts, shirt, and sandals? It is not fair.
A. We ask students to dress as they would in a business casual type atmosphere.
- Can you do weight room even if you do not do a Shen sport
A. Yes. The weight room is open every day after school from 2:45 to 5:00 pm.
- Why is each percussion student in the HSE band required to purchase their own snare drum sticks, bell mallets, timpani mallets, and yarn marimba mallets. I just purchased these for my child (no snare sticks) and paid $115! This is crazy! Why doesn’t Shen have a supply for these kids to use? It’s not like they are playing an instrument that they can bring home! So why doesn’t Shen have these in the band room for the students to use. Ex. there is only one student who can play a timpani at a time yet all percussion students will have mallets for it. Why?
A. Percussion students at the middle and high school are asked to purchase only one set of mallets/sticks each year, a cost similar to what other students would have to pay yearly for reeds, mouthpieces, etc.
- Hi. I am a student in HSW and an avid leggins-wearer. Leggings are comfortable and they can be worn with many other articles of clothing. We didn’t have to do this in eighth grade, but why do we have to wear shirts that come till mid-thigh in length just to wear leggings? Wearing a top that doesn’t come till mid-thigh doesn’t mean that this outfit is provocative but rather puts a deeper restraint on female students in the building. As a female student, I find this dress code policy very derogatory to girls. Please explain this rule. Wearing a shorter top will not and should not hinder someone else’s education.
A. The purpose of school is to learn. Restrictions on fashion are made at the building level based on whether or not someone’s choices are safe and appropriate and/or disrupt, distract or interfere with the educational process or participation in a school activity/function.
- I already picked up my parking pass for this school year, but I will now be driving a different car to school with a different license plate. How do I get the pass changed?
A. Please let the class assistant principal’s office know and they will make the change.

A. Homerooms are by grade and alphabetical.
- I would like to know the criteria for the NHS. Is it 90% GPA for each year or 90% combined? My child doesn’t have 90% for the first year, the rest two years is above 90.
A. Please see the webpage http://shennhs.webs.com/. If your question is not answered there, contact the advisor (contact info available on the page).
- Why is there a fee for seniors to park in the Shen parking lot when we already pay taxes that provide for all upkeep of that parking lot.
A. Public education is a right. Driving to school is a privilege, not a right.
- Have you considered livestream for the graduation? It would be nice for grandparents etc who cannot attend.
A. As with everything, it comes down to cost. However, it is explored each year.

- For AP World History students, does the Regents count as part of the final grade, or is the AP exam calculated in?

- How many classes do you have to fail in order to go to summer school? Also is it optional to go to summer school?
A. Summer school is optional. There is not a minimum number of classes that a student needs to fail in order to attend summer school.
- Why do the HSW Hall monitors randomly lock the doors to the bathrooms at different intervals of the day? It’s fruitless and stupid and wastes students time because they have to walk to the nearest bathroom, which sometimes is far away being that there is only 3 bathrooms, can this be stopped please, it’s annoying.
A. For supervision purposes, the only bathrooms that are open at HSW before homeroom are the ones in the Cafeteria Lobby. - Is the overall average on the quarterly report cards weighted?
A. No. Weighted grades are only for class rank.
- It seems strange that a 9th grade student, for example, that is taking Algebra Honors would receive the same weight for the course as a 9th grade student taking Algebra 2 Honors, a double accelerated course. This skews the class ranks in an unfavorable way for accelerated kids. Is there a reason why this is the policy?
A. All students in the same course, regardless of the age of the student or grade the student is in when taking the course, receive the same weighted multiplier (Policy 7223). Students who reach more advanced courses earlier have the opportunity to take more advanced courses later in their high school career as illustrated by […]
- Why is there a four-to-a-table rule in the library? I often go to the library with myself and more than 3 other friends (so 4). The odd person out will usually move a chair up to the table so we can all sit together. Me and my other peers frequently get yelled at for this, even when there are countless open tables. I don’t see how this is a problem, as long as the noise is kept in check. I believe that there should be a 3 strikes system for noise level if there is more than 4 to a table, seeing as more people = more noise. Names are taken of each person at the table, if there are more than 4, and they are being noisy. If someone’s name appears 3 times, they are not allowed to sit more than 4 anymore. Thanks for the feedback.
A. The library is a busy and large facility (over 200 seats) in which we need to maintain an academic environment in which classes can conduct research and students can read, work individually and in small groups on academic projects. The four person to a table policy (also the policy in most area high school libraries) […]

- I heard that senior classes are not weighted with the ap or honors credit, is this true?
A. They are weighted, but only if students take the advanced placement test if they are in AP. Honors is also weighted.

A. Physical Education will do archery as a unit in the Fall.

- Hello, I was wondering what happens if a student fails a regents exam? Sometimes it’s not the students fault but rather the student simply doesn’t understand the teachers teaching methods. It’s simply my opinion, I don’t always think it’s the students fault for failing an exam, I’m not implying it isn’t always but sometimes the student can study and study and get nervous and simply blank out!

- Many students and parents are unable to understand the difference between final exams and regents in high school. Too, they find it hard to understand how the testings figure into the grade equations for the quarter, or the overall grading of the year. Would you be so kind as to spell that out here in this forum? Thank you!
A. This school year high school faculty members will be spending much time looking to become more consistent when calculating grades using final and regents exams. While each course may be different, about 10-20% of a student’s grade is made up of the final or Regents exam.
