During business meetings, when public comments are allowed, residents can submit comments to the BOE@shenschools.org to be read during the meeting.
About the meetings
Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held in the library located at High School East at 6:00 p.m. typically on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Other meetings of the board are scheduled as needed during the year. All meetings are open to the public.
Order of Business
Meetings of the board follow a prepared agenda. The board conducts two types of meetings, business and study sessions. During a business session, the board votes on particular items on the agenda. There are two public comment periods at business sessions During a study session, the board receives information and updates on various district goals. Generally, there are no action items are on the agenda. Also, there are no public comment periods at study sessions. The board also meets in executive session to discuss collective negotiations and other items that are confidential as defined by the Open Meeting Law of the State of New York. Executive sessions are closed to the public; however, any formal action on the passage of any resolution must be taken in open public session.
Public participation
Residents wishing to address the Board of Education can do so during public comment. Speakers are asked to fill out and submit Form BOE 3220F and are requested to state their name and address to confirm residency and to use in the event follow-up is necessary. It is requested that speakers be succinct and confine their remarks to two or three minutes in order to provide an opportunity for others to speak. The board expect residents to speak in a respectful and courteous manner, so as to model proper civility and decorum for students. The board will not address specific comments during the public session period. BOE Meeting Agenda and Minutes
The agenda for the meeting is posted 72 hours prior, unless it is an emergency meeting. Presentation materials will be available at least a day before the meeting. Board meeting minutes are not posted until after they are approved by the board. Minutes are typically approved at the first meeting each month.
