Hi, I was wondering who I should contact about the amount of Summer homework many children have? It seems if you are in HS and in accelerated or honors classes, you get punished over the summer. The amount of time spent – daily – on homework is unacceptable (Math, English and Social Studies). My child is also taking a voluntary health class this summer and has that work as well. That should be more than enough! Thank you.

A. Contact information for all of the academic administrators for the various subject areas can be found here: https://www.shenet.org/contact-us/

Is the district going to start looking at giving out tickets for graduation in future years as the classes are starting to grow? I have been to the 2016 and now the 2018 graduations and both times have been record breaking years. I was two hours early to find just 4 seats for my family and even left my other children home because I knew it was going to be hard to find seats. I was fighting for seats just for myself and husband to see OUR child graduate and there were people taping off WHOLE sections and rows for aunts, uncles, young cousins, and grandparents to see their child graduate. There were actual fights with people because of this. There should be rules with graduation about this and the school needs to place guidelines about this. Some parents had to sit on the lawn because of rude people taking 10 to 20 seats at a time. I told my family if they were coming they would sit on the lawn because I was not taking parent seats. Something really needs to be done!

A. There are currently no plans to require tickets for graduation.

The school website says 804 students would be graduating this year making it the largest class in Shen history. At the graduation it was stated that 783 students would be graduating, this is also the number in the newspapers. How many students of the class of 2018 actually graduated.

A. We apologize for the mistake. The actual size of the graduating class was 771, making it the third largest graduating class behind 2015 and 2016 which were tied at 779.

Is the 95 or greater medal at graduation awarded to those who earned 95 or above each year or is it based on an average of the years. I know this question was asked previously, but the answer was yes to an either or question, so I am still unclear.

A. An overall GPA of 95 or greater.

What was required for a graduate to have a gold tassel compared to the green and white one?

A. Every graduate gets a green/white tassel. The gold is for a GPA of 85% or higher.

If you fail your final exam but don’t overall fail the class do you have to go to summer school

A. If you have passed the class you do not need to go to summer school.  However, you would need to retake the final if it is a Regents Exam needed for graduation.  Summer review classes are available for students prior to August Regents Exams.

Is the global regents put into the portal as a grade if you take AP world

A. Yes.

What would happen if someone doesn’t attend summer school and they need to?

A.  They will be rescheduled for a class if needed for graduation.

When will sign ups be for Junior Citizenship passes?

A. Typically, they use the first 5 weeks of the school year to establish a baseline and then allow students to apply.

Can the school establish a JROTC Program?

A.  Any interest in starting a group should follow the proper channels for starting a new club. Please see an administrator for information on starting a new HS club.
