As mandated by the New York State Education Department, Shenendehowa Central School District will be phasing out the use of the “Plainsmen” team name starting immediately. Our Board of Education voted to phase out this name in direct response to the New York State Education Department mandate. More information about this mandate can be found at this link.
This will be a long transition, but one with which we will exercise due diligence and pay homage to our 75 years of history and traditions. We are excited about the opportunity this provides Shenendehowa to consider our mascot and team name moving forward and how we can involve our staff, students, and community in the transition process. This change builds upon Shen’s longstanding history of honoring our past while building toward a future that exemplifies our commitment to excellence.
This year, we will work with school leaders, teams, clubs, and local organizations that use the “Plainsmen” name transition to using “Shen” as the primary reference to our teams and clubs. In the future, when we work to develop a new mascot and name, we will ensure it is collaborative, and engenders the viewpoints of our students, staff, and key stakeholders.
